Abstract：

Objective To explore the normal aging characteristics of the regional homogeneity (ReHo) of the brains of healthy adults in the resting state, which could provide a new characteristic parameter for aging assessment. Methods We studied resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging from international consortium for brain mapping. Applying the preprocessed images, the ReHo of the gray matter in whole brain was obtained, and then compared between the older and younger adult groups with gender as a covariate. Results The significantly decreased ReHo were localized in the hippocampus, the thalamus, the superior temporal gyrus, the opercular part of inferior frontal gyrus, the middle occipital gyrus, the superior frontal gyrus, the superior occipital gyrus and postcentral gyrus. And we found that ReHo was significantly increased in amygdala, lingual gyrus and anterior cingulate & paracingulate gyri for aged subjects. Conclusions The ReHo within specific brain functional regions have significant differences between the older and younger adult groups, which can be regarded as a characteristic parameter for normal aging.
