Objective To investigate the feasibility of designing custom hip stem prostheses based on X-ray films.To solve the problem of custom hip stem prostheses can not be designed based on blurred CT images,and reduce the design costs.Methods First,hip stem prostheses for ten femurs were designed according to their X-ray films.Then,these hip stem prosthesis models were implanted into corresponding femur contour lines models,extracted from CT images.Interference and matching situation between prostheses and corresponding femoral cavities were analyzed.Finally,custom hip stem prosthesis,designed according to a patient’s X-ray films,was implanted into the patient’s femoral cavity.Results These hip stem prostheses could be implanted into correspon-dingfemoral cavities and matched corresponding femoral cavities well.Conclusions The design of custom hip stem prostheses based on X-ray films is practicable and this kind of hip stem prostheses matches corresponding femoral cavities well.The software system programmed by the authors canbe used to design custom hip stem prostheses for patients.
